Colour-coated steel coils are widely used across various industries. They are primarily utilized in construction, automotive manufacturing, home appliances, solar energy devices, and furniture. In home appliances, these steel coils are commonly used for the side panels of refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and washing machines.
A colour-coated steel coil is a steel coil with decorative paint applied to both sides. These coils typically feature a polymer coating available in a variety of colours and finishes, such as matte, glossy, or decorative natural textures. The coating not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also protects the steel from atmospheric corrosion, increasing its strength and durability.
Also referred to as pre-painted steel, colour-coated steel is produced through a process that includes surface pre-treatment, application of one or more layers of coating, and subsequent baking and cooling.
Colour-coated steel coils are typically made using galvanized coils as the base material. Paint is applied after the hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel coils are given a metallic coating. Below are the steps involved in the production process:
1. Unwinding the steel coil into sheets.
2. Pre-cleaning the surface of the sheet.
3. Levelling the sheet for uniformity.
4. Chemical treatment and de-oiling of the sheet.
5. Applying primer to the steel.
6. Curing/drying the primer in an oven.
7. Applying the paint coat (on one or both sides, using a dipping or roll method).
8. Curing/drying the paint coat in an oven.
9. Cooling the painted sheet.
10. Recoiling the sheet into a colour-coated steel coil.
To prevent mechanical damage, some manufacturers apply a protective film over the colour coat.
Different chemical compounds are used to colour-coat steel. Based on the type of resin used, here are the key types of colour coatings:
- Resistant to high air temperature and corrosion.
- Features colour stability, plasticity, and longevity.
- Widely used for industrial roofing, wall structures, interior and exterior construction materials, and partitions.
- Smooth matte surface with micro-roughness.
- Offers excellent colour stability, mechanical resistance, and durability.
- Suitable for various climates and can mimic natural materials.
- Blend of polyvinyl fluoride (80%) and acryl (20%).
- Offers superior resistance to water, snow, acids, and alkali.
- Ideal for wall cladding and roofing.
- Composed of polyvinyl chloride and plasticisers.
- Thick coating (~0.2 mm) provides good mechanical and weather resistance.
- Less heat-resistant and has limited colour stability.
- Modified with polyamide and acryl for enhanced UV resistance and longevity.
- Highly resistant to industrial acids and chemicals.
- Provides high strength and durability.
- Combines polyester with silicon intermediates.
- Offers improved gloss retention, weather resistance, and scratch resistance.
- Resistant to chalking and fading over time.
Colour-coated steel is widely used across various industries, including construction, home appliances, furniture, consumer goods, and automotive sectors. Common applications include:
- Construction: Roofs, roof structures, rolling shutters, kiosks, guard doors, ventilation ducts, and street waiting rooms.
- Home Appliances: Refrigerator panels, air conditioner casings, electronic stove exteriors, washing machine shells, and oil stove bodies.
- Automotive Industry: Car ceilings, backboards, hoardings, car shells, tractor components, ship bulkheads, dashboards, and windscreen wipers.
