Steel Hot-rolled Products Types and Applications

Hot rolled steel is steel that has been rolled at high temperatures above 1700°F, which is above the recrystallization temperature of most steels. This makes steel easier to mold, and also results in an easier product to process.

Processing hot-rolled steel, manufacturers firstly start with a large, rectangular piece of metal which called a billet. The billets are heated and then sent to preprocessing where they are flattened into large rolls. From there, it is kept at high temperatures and passed through a series of rollers to reach its final size. White-hot steel wire is pushed through the drum at high speed. For sheet metal, rolled steel is rolled into coils and cooled.The material is segmented and packaged for other shapes, such as rods or sheets.

Steel shrinks slightly when cooled. After processing,hot rolled steel is cooled, so there is less control over its final form, making it less suitable for precision applications. Hot rolled steel is often used in applications where meticulous and specific dimensions are not crucial.Hot rolled steel are also often used in railway tracks and construction projects.

Since hot rolled steel usually requires much less processing than cold rolled steel,makes it much cheaper. Because hot rolled steel is allowed to cool to room temperature, It is essentially normalized. This means that it is free from internal stresses that can arise from the processes of cooling or hardening by work.

Hot rolled steel is ideal when dimensional tolerances are not so important as the overall strength of the material and where surface finish is not a key concern. If surface finish is a concern, the inlays can be removed by grinding, sand spray or decapitated in an acid bath. Once the inlays are removed, various brush or mirror finishes can also be applied. Decorated steel also offers a better surface for painting and other surface coatings.
